Northern Nevada Health System Recognized with Seven American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Achievements

Northern Nevada Health System has received the American Heart and Stroke Association’s highest national honors. The awards recognize the System’s commitment to ensuring stroke, cardiac and diabetic patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. The System earned the following awards.

“Our teams across Northern Nevada Health System work to provide high quality care to our patients and these awards are a testament to their ability to continuously educate and refine processes that align our hospitals as top-rated heart and stroke facilities,” said Katie Grimm, chief nursing officer at Northern Nevada Medical Center.

Northern Nevada Medical Center (NNMC) earned the Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Gold Plus – Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll and the Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Gold Plus – Target: Type 2 Diabetes awards. The Heart Failure Honor Roll was awarded by demonstrating 75% compliance for 24 consecutive months for required measures. The Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll was awarded for achieving 75% compliance for 24 consecutive months for measures including post-discharge appointment for heart failure patients with diabetes and smoking cessation for patients with diabetes.

Both NNMC and Sierra Medical Center (SMC) qualified and earned the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll and the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus – Target: Type 2 Diabetes. The Stroke Elite Plus Honor Rolls were awarded for compliance of door-to-needle times within 45 minutes for at least 75% of applicable patients and door-to-needle times within 30 minutes for at least 50% of applicable patients. NNMC and SMC were awarded the Target: Type 2 Diabetes by demonstration of compliance for 24 consecutive months for required measures, including smoking cessation for patients with diabetes and intensive statin prescription at discharge for patients with diabetes.

Lastly, the ER at McCarran NW was recognized with the Get With The Guidelines – Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Referring Silver Plus. This award was based on the facility’s ability to achieve and comply with various metrics for 12 consecutive months. These metrics include arrival and discharge within 30 minutes of arrival, and beta blocker and smoking cessation counseling provided at discharge.

“To have received a collective seven awards for both of our hospitals and freestanding emergency department is a significant indicator of our clinical dedication to patient safety and quality,” said Kaytlyn Korn, MSN, RN, stroke coordinator at NNHS. “We value staff education and focus our initiatives on the latest clinical recommendations and guidelines. This ensures we are high performers in all clinical indicators and our staff training reflects such outcomes.”
