While sports can be a fun way for students to be physically active, it can also lead to unforeseen injuries. Brenden Nutt, DPT, Outpatient Physical Therapies, Northern Nevada Medical Center, explains the importance of making sure your child gets their sports physical prior to the start of the season.

When is a sports physical needed?

Most high school sports require a sports physical be performed every year. So, if your child participates in multiple sports, one sports physical is valid for a c alendar year.

While sports physicals are not required for youth sports, it’s a good idea to schedule one to make sure your child is healthy enough to participate and to identify potential risk factors for your child.

Why is it important to have a sports physical?

A full assessment is important to ensure your child’s mental, physical, musculoskeletal and vision health are all in good shape so they can safely participate in their sport. The healthcare provider will be checking for signs of a possible heart murmur, possible lung conditions, respiratory issues, or others that may impact your child’s ability to safely participate. The provider will also assess weight and height, blood pressure and heart rate readings, vision and hearing, joint and flexibility tests, and more.

However, as conditions can quickly develop while a child is growing, it is important to maintain a yearly sports physical to confirm no additional conditions are identified. Parents are also encouraged to schedule annual visits to the pediatrician to assess the child’s overall health, well-being and growth. The more information your provider knows, the better the plan they can develop for safe sports play.

Where can I receive a sports physical?

Sports physicals are available at urgent cares, family medicine clinics and through your child’s pediatrician. If your child has required paperwork from their sports organization or school, be sure to take it to your appointment.

Sports are a great way for your child to be actively involved in the community, and it is important to take the needed steps to ensure they are engaged in safe play.
