Titleist Performance Institute Approach to Golf Physical Therapy
July 1, 2025
Health NewsLike any sport, golfing can be a game of physical and mental strength. Kevin Carr, PT, DPT, Outpatient Physical Therapist, Northern Nevada Medical Center, shares insight on how the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) has developed a program to prevent injury and improve a golfer’s swing.
What is the TPI Approach?
The TPI Approach focuses on assessing a golfer’s physical abilities and how it might influence their swing. The approach then identifies how various adjustments or exercises can help to improve performance and reduce injury risk.
A TPI-certified physical therapist will evaluate a patient to map movement patterns, strength, flexibility and stability to better inform how a different motion might improve their swing, including changes to their arms, hips and legs. Assessment includes movement evaluations, physical screens and swing analysis.
How is the approach beneficial for golfers?
The overarching philosophy of the TPI approach is that although there are infinite ways to swing a golf club, the TPI sees one efficient way for everyone based on their body, and the assessment and training allows for the development and use of that efficient swing.
Based on assessment results, a TPI-certified physical therapist will develop a customized training program that can include fitness training, physical therapy and treatment, and swing coaching. The therapist will work with you to improve your body’s mechanics to fit a certain swing or work in conjunction with a swing coach to change your swing to match your body’s form for optimal performance.
What does the process look like to start TPI physical therapy?
Northern Nevada Medical Center Outpatient Therapy clinics allow for self-referrals, so you can request an appointment with a TPI-certified physical therapist. However, it is suggested that you call your insurance provider to ensure a self-referral is not required for your specific plan to receive coverage.
