What is an Alter-G® Anti-Gravity Treadmill™?
September 18, 2024
Health NewsAdvancements in medical technology have introduced the Alter-G Treadmill as a new method for use during physical therapy for an injury, post-surgical patient, or to treat a variety of conditions. Kevin Wright, PT, DPT, SCS, COMT, FAAOMPT, Physical Therapist, Northern Nevada Medical Center – Outpatient Therapies, provides insight on this machine.
What is an Alter-G Treadmill?
An Alter-G Treadmill allows a patient to run and walk at less than 100% of their body weight. This works by zipping the lower half of the body into an air compressor chamber that helps the patient float. The treadmill can lower a patient’s body weight down to only 20% of their original weight. The reduced pressure creates less impact and irritation on the injured or strained parts of the lower body.
When is an Alter-G Treadmill used?
An Alter-G Treadmill is used in physical therapy for people recovering from injuries and surgeries. They can use the treadmill to regain muscle and mobility earlier than they are able to with traditional rehab. While the treadmill is generally used for athletes, it is also beneficial for neurology patients struggling with weight-bearing exercises used during aerobic therapy.
What type of specialists operate the Alter-G Treadmill?
Physical therapists specializing in sports medicine operate the treadmill to ensure it aligns with the patient’s injuries and recovery goals. The same type of specialist will recommend the treadmill for non-athletic needs. If you have a need for physical therapy, this treadmill may be an appropriate addition to your treatment and covered by insurance.
