What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

Packing your hospital bag to ensure you have everything you need during labor and delivery can be tricky. Caitlyn Barnett, RN, BSN, Postpartum Clinical Supervisor, The Family Birth Center, Sierra Medical Center, an extension of Northern Nevada Medical Center, explains that there are only a few key things you should prioritize, and the rest are usually provided by the hospital.

What are common items a mom should bring?

When packing for your delivery, treat the process like you are packing for a normal hotel stay. The main items you want to bring are toiletries, comfortable clothing, non-slip shoes or slippers or socks, and a pumping bra if you plan to breastfeed.

Remember, you’re also packing for your little one as well. So be sure to bring at least one outfit your baby can be dressed in to go home. If you forget something at home, your partner and family members can bring those items during your stay.

What items does the hospital provide for postpartum moms?

The hospital will provide you with several resources, including postpartum underwear, witch hazel pads to relieve itching and discomfort after delivery, numbing spray, hot packs, nipple cream, gowns, infant diapers, and formula. Most patients are only in the hospital for 24-48 hours postpartum, so we encourage expecting parents to pack light, while keeping in mind mom’s comfort.

What items should not be packed in your hospital bag?

A hospital stay is unique, and there are items we discourage families from bringing into the hospital. Refrain from packing prescription medications or pain relievers. The hospital will support moms with pain management, and home medications can be listed in your medical chart and provided by the hospital. In addition, keep room décor and personal items such as jewelry, wallets/purses, and similar item at home so they are not lost or misplaced during your stay. By bringing only the essentials, you’ll go home with a lighter load.
